Session Lineup: Josh (Bass), Nate (Drums), Tim (Saxophone), Sharon (Keyboards:Synth), Jon (Guitar)
Setlist: Sound check, D’Easy Way (new D jam), New E Blues Jam, Trippin on Wes, D’Easy Way Reprise (another D jam), Hip Hug-Her, Inner City Blues, Stuck in Traffic, Lamont’s Lament, Pusherman, People Say
A much more laid back session this Sunday, but with some great improvisation and new material, including a couple of new jams in E and D, and the first time played classic Booker-T and the MGs Hip Hug-Her. We also dusted off an old favorite and original DoS tune, Trippin on Wes. Other DoS originals like Stuck in Traffic and Lamont’s Lament are still band favorites currently in rotation.
Session Lineup: Josh (Bass), Nate (Drums), Tim (Saxophone), Ken (Keyboards:Piano), Sharon (Keyboards:Synth), Jon (Guitar)
Setlist: All Blues, Lamont’s Lament, Put the Funk Back in It, Chameleon, Since You’ve Been Gone > Harris Groove, Miss You, Stuck in Traffic
In the Oct 3 session was a solid run from start to finish. We tried an experimental ending this week for All Blues, the Miles Davis jazz standard, stepping it down to F for the final few bars for a twist. I think that’ll need some more work before it’s ready for primetime. SYBG > Harris Groove continues in the rotation as we work out the kinks on the transition — but expect it to be around for awhile. Also two more DoS originals, Lamont’s Lament and Stuck in Traffic make appearences. We are reworking the guitar overlay on both right now, but Tim’s horn just absolutely lights them up.
DoS continues to push the envelop on some instrumental and improvisational jams. This past session’s lineup featured Josh (Bass), Nate (Drums), Jon (Guitar), and Sharon (Keyboards). Setlist: Josh & Nate Jam, Fiddling/Setup, Jam in A, Put the Funk Back in it, Since You Been Gone > Harris Intro > Harris Groove, Pusherman, SM, Death Threat
This session we experimented with a new transition for Since You Been Gone & Harris Groove. SYBG is an upbeat James Brown tune in D. Stepping up key to E when it was time for a breather — and after a few measures it fell almost naturally into Harris Groove, one of our early originals. It was completely organic and going back to listen it worked extremely well. Pusherman (Curtis Mayfield) also enthusiastically emerged back in rotation after a stint on the sidelines.
Check out the new DoS photos added to the Gallery, chronicling the band through it’s humble roots in 2001 to this summer’s breakthrough gig on July 3, 2010 in the new Columbia Heights center at the Columbia Heights Community Market.
